Mission

Helping build disaster-resilient and sustainable coastal communities by working with internal constituencies (such as communities, local NGOs, CBOs, local administration, and traditional or elected panchayats) and external communities (such as research institutions, higher government, universities, technology providers and the industry) to evolve appropriate interventions for different local problems.

Objectives

BEDROC will
  1. Leverage experiences of the 2004 tsunami to create community-based and community-owned mechanisms for enhanced disaster response, mitigation and preparedness for coastal communities
  2. Explore models and carry out pilots for the creation of community-based mechanisms for enhancement of community resilience in terms of livelihoods, disaster preparedness and information support; and where possible, replicate, up-scale and mainstream these for the benefit of communities
  3. Facilitate formation of local platforms to collaborate with the Government, NGOs, CBOs, academic, research and other relevant institutions for building disaster preparedness and for ensuring post-disaster responses that are appropriate, feasible, acceptable, equitable and sustainable. In the course of this endeavour BEDROC will also carry forward and meaningfully continue any or all activities of the NGO Coordination and Resource Centre (NCRC) as deemed fit, meaningful, necessary, obligatory and in keeping with the furtherance of the overall goal of the project.
  4. Create knowledge sharing networks using Information-Communication Technologies in order to facilitate access to informational, educational, transactional and recreational services within the overall framework of the project
  5. Collaborate with Government institutions, public enterprises, private institutions or individuals for furthering the goal of the Project
  6. Conduct research programmes and studies, and document the learnings, good practices and processes that will meaningfully contribute to the mainstreaming of disaster risk reduction within the overall development framework
  7. Facilitate community access and utilization of State and Civil Society development initiatives.
