Cover Page ThumbnailThe Oxfam-BEDROC study "Building Local Capacities for Disaster Response and Risk Reduction" has been published. The study attempted to assess perceptions of coastal communities on disasters, aid, and changes to their own response capacity & community resilience subsequent to the 2004 tsunami. The analysis was done with reference to the Hyogo Framework of Action’s five thematic areas for disaster resilience. The full report is available here.
Building and Enabling Disaster Resilience of Coastal Communities (BEDROC) is the successor to the Nagapattinam NGO Co-ordination and Resource Centre (NCRC), the very successful multi-stakeholder co-ordination and programme implementation platform set up after the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami. BEDROC was set up as a legal entity to continue the longer-term activities initiated by the NCRC, which, as scheduled, was discontinued in Jan 2008, three years after the tsunami. BEDROC continues with largely the same leaders, partners, CEO & team, as well as the learnings of the NCRC, and is also a legal entity.

BEDROC is not a programme implementation agency per se, but an incubator of development interventions for the coastal communities of South India. Given its professional team, access to internal and external stakeholders, and its learnings from the three years of post-tsunami work in different sectors such as water, child rights, governance, livelihoods and agriculture, BEDROC is uniquely placed to evolve, pilot, operationalize and replicate solutions to different challenges faced by coastal communities.
